Whaia Te Pae Tawhiti : Our Year 13 students go to University

At the end of June our Year 13 students spent a week at the Auckland University learning about the options available to them if they choose to attend Auckland University next year. They enjoyed a number of experiences that the university provided for them, they met other students from about 20 other secondary schools and were great ambassadors for Te Whanau o Tupuranga.

Students participated in workshops from the School of Business where they had to work in their groups, imagine they were a company, choose a market to trade in and problem solve a number of scenarios according to market volatility, human resources, and the state of the economy.

They met a small team of student support staff from Auckland University College of Education who encouraged them to take up teaching as a career. Other workshops involved a variety of other faculties introducing themselves and their courses and what is involved in being accepted into the faculties. Facilitators were keen for the students to see and experience a lecture type scenario in the large lecture halls so they can get a feel of what university study is like – that it’s not all fun and games but does require attending lectures, note-taking, and hard work. Students were involved in goal setting and listening to young Maori already at university.

It wasn’t all work. Students made and viewed movies, visited Ngati Whatua sites of significance and enjoyed dressing up for a formal dinner.

Our group was very impressed with the level of planning and preparation that went into the Whaia te Pae Tawhiti programme and we will be very keen to participate again. Our students came back saying it was an awesome week, and all telling us they were definitely going to go to university next year.

Tupuranga Clubhouse Members are off to Boston, USA

Congratulations to three Clubhouse 274 members and Te Whanau o Tupuranga students, Veisinia Ha’unga, Nathaniel Toia, and Storm Tamati, who will travel to the Teen Summit in Boston, USA in July this year.

Applicants had complete a "Comms Challenge" to be considered for selection. Members had to find six stations scattered around the Campus and complete challenges at each station that would give them the coordinates to find their next station. The challenges included a Skype call to Canada, transferring a message using semaphore flags, email, an online whiteboard, telephone and even via paper cups connected with string.

The Teen Summit group have been very busy fundraising and preparing the work they need to take to the Summit. They held a Disco, Mufti Day and Sausage Sizzle at school and raised over $600. This will go towards a couple of extra days in Boston where the team will be visiting places like the Museum of Fine Arts.

On 9 July members of the Otara Tongan community gathered together to help raise funds for the Teen Summit to support Veisinia and the other team members. Our thanks to all families for their wonderful support!

For the first time in 2010 members from other Aotearoa Clubhouses will be joining our team in Boston - and all will be wearing these T-Shirts designed by Nathaniel.

ABOUT THE TEEN SUMMIT

The Teen Summit is a biennial event that includes opportunities for Clubhouse youth to express their ideas with high-end technologies, such as graphic design, video animation, digital art, music, radio and documentary film-making, and 3-D modeling.

Each Teen Summit takes place on a university campus in Boston, Massachusetts, and includes a college and career fair, collaborative activities with youth from around the world, and many other opportunities for educational, career and personal growth.

From July 27 - August 1, 250 Computer Clubhouse youth leaders from around the world will be in Boston, Massachusetts for the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network's 2010 Teen Summit.

These young leaders, ages 13 to 18, are from 20 countries, including Russia, Jordan, Israel, South Africa, Palestine, New Zealand, India, Brazil, and the United States. The theme of the Summit is: Mobilize, Act, Inspire! The youth will share ideas, learn new skills, and work together on projects that address socially conscious challenges such as reducing urban violence and improving the environment.

Mahepohepotanga

Tupuranga students and staff attended the Mahepohepotanga Tournament held at Ngati Otara Park and the Prize Giving at the Manukau Greyhound Stadium on the 23rd June.

Our students have hosted this Kura Maori Netball and Rugby League competition throughout the 2010 season and were hosts to the nine teams who participated in the final Tournament day. Our teams played really well and were great ambassadors for Te Whanau o Tupuranga. Both of our teams ended up placing 4th overall.

We were also fortunate enough to have some of our players selected for the Tournament teams. Stacey Samuels made the Netball team and Reece Gilbert and Bryton Kaumoana made the League team.

Education Review Office Visit: 8 - 11 June 2010

Clover Park Middle School was reviewed by ERO at the beginning of June. We are currently awaiting our written report, which will be shared on our website and a summary will be sent to all parents. The Board of Trustees has received a verbal report however, which was extremely positive.

ERO reviewers spoke of effective consultation and communication, and the fact that everyone students, teachers, parents all said the same things. They told us that in terms of academic achievement our students are progressing very well, not only in English and Maths, but in other curriculum areas as well. They particularly acknowledged our learning model and curriculum design.

Reviewers said had a really good opportunity to go to the classrooms to see our “Warrior Scholars” and to listen to the things that our young people shared. They reported they had in-depth conversations about their learning and their topics and found very high order thinking, questioning, and students challenging their own capability.

Our thanks to staff, students, our Board and parents who all contributed to this positive result.

The Prime Minister launches our Clubhouse Connected Community Project

Launch of the Computer Clubhouse Connected Community Project

Thanks to everyone who was part of the Clubhouse 274 Wifi Community and Mobile Clubhouse Launch. The project, which was officially opened by the Right Hon, John Key on 27 May 2010, delivers an integrated digital learning environment, which includes Clubhouse 274 operating as a hub between schools and the community: along with a seamless set of digital solutions including:

A fibre network that provides ultrafast broadband to a free community wide wireless network to all Clover Park
An online portal allowing the community to communicate and create digital content developed by the University of Auckland and funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Manukau City Council
Provision of low cost Intel Classmate Laptops to senior students and Clubhouse members
A Mobile Clubhouse 274 to outreach anywhere within the Computer Clubhouse community project
